Wash Those Hands! Wash away germs that
can cause colds, flu, stomach upsets, and a host of more serious infections.
This live-action personal hygiene video shows how the simple act of hand
washing helps control disease. With infectious and increasingly drug-resistant
diseases on the upswing,, video explains how a simple health practice
helps prevent the spread of bacterial and viral illnesses. As an introduction
to basic personal hygiene, this video is a useful component of an elementary
AIDS education curriculum. A teen-aged narrator demonstrates proper hand
washing and presents concise, straightforward information and benefits
of hand washing for everyone. Covers germ basics, including what and where
they are, and how do they make people sick? Explains how to get rid of
germs, when is hand washing most important and what is the right way to
wash hands? Back to Preventing Communicable Diseases
The Truth About Sex More
than half of all teenagers have had sex before the age of 18. Every 10
seconds in America, another teenager contracts a sexually transmitted
disease, and over 3,000 teens become pregnant each day. Parents and teens
are often too uncomfortable to discuss the risks associated with sex.
This program supports Health & Guidance, Sex Education, Family Life, and
Life Skills units on human growth and development, human sexuality and
reproduction, behavioral choices, and STDs. With 20/20 clarity, it focuses
on the realities of having sex too young, including unwanted pregnancies
and STDs. Students' understanding of the relationship between unsafe behaviors
and personal health is reinforced through real-world examples of several
sexually active teenagers. Two teens discuss the struggles of becoming
parents at such a young age, while another young couple faces the possibility
that they could be pregnant. A group of teens tour a microbiology lab,
where hundreds of STD cases are diagnosed each year, and participate in
a "mock AIDS test." Lisa, a 33-year-old woman with full-blown AIDS, shares
her story. © 1999 Back to Preventing Communicable Diseases

The Immune System: Doing Its
Part This program describes certain malfunctions of the immune system,
including allergic responses and auto-immune disorders, and introduces
the concept of rejection. It explains how HIV (the virus that causes AIDS)
is able to overpower the immune system so that it can no longer protect
the body from disease. Doing Its Part stresses the importance of basic
good hygiene and preventive health practices in avoiding exposure to harmful
germs and in maintaining a healthy immune system. ©1998 Back to Preventing Communicable Diseases
Preventing Communicable Diseases:
Colds, Flu, AIDS, STDs What are warm wet spots? Health educator and
television personality, Ruby Unger uses this catch-phrase to identify
the kinds of places that germs grow best---places that are warm, wet and
dark. Combines state-of- the-art computer animation, humor, popular music,
special effects, and classroom demonstrations to present useful information
about germs, bacteria, and the prevention and transmission of communicable
diseases. Explain how germs cause disease. The inside of the body serves
as the perfect host to bacteria and viruses, and germs can get in and
out through such openings as the mouth, nose, and eyes. Our immune system
helps fight disease and factors that strengthen the immune system include:
healthy eating, sufficient sleep, regular exercise, and avoiding tobacco,
alcohol, and other drugs. Additional teen-produced animation and "dramedy"
segments create an MTV-like energy to appeal to today's teenagers, and
a musical rap number also told in American Sign Language instructs students
on healthy hygiene techniques. Also covered is the prevention of sexually
transmitted disease. Whereas some communicable diseases can be transmitted
through the air, AIDS and STDs can be transmitted by "warm wet spot" body
